Medical Services







  • Independent Medical Evaluation – An examination that is performed by a physician not involved in the care of the examinee for the purpose of clarifying issues associated with the claim.  This is an impartial, unbiased and objective assessment in which no physician/patient relationship or privilege exists.







    • Blood Work - Our occupational nurse can draw blood for Hospital testing, and can conduct routine tests.





    • Urinalysis - Urinalysis can provide rapid screening of acute or chronic illnesses; generally for the diagnosis of diabetes, infection and long term chronic conditions.





    • Drug Testing – A variety of panel testing which can identify use of alcohol and various prescription and non-prescription drugs.






  • Executive Medical - Protect the investment that a company has in its Executives and reduce the liability that an ill executive would create.  It is designed to be a thorough test that is conscientious of the time restraints on an Executive's schedule.




  • Employee and Family Assistance Program - The FIT For Work Employee and Family Assistance program is designed to provide short-term assistance to employees and immediate family members who are experiencing problems.  EFAP provides confidential, professional assistance for a wide range of personal and interpersonal problems to help employees live healthy and productive lives. The program encompasses a full spectrum of services including family issues, financial concerns, addictions counseling, mental health issues, marital issues, stress and conflict.

Occupational Rehabilitation Services






Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE) – This assesses the evaluee's general work tolerances and provides clear guidelines as to a person's functional abilities i.e. lifting, carrying, sitting, standing, etc.  Information can be given as to the evaluee's level of employability in a specific job or in general.




Job Site Analysis (JSA) - An on-site assessment of the physical demands of a specific job.  Recommendations may be given as to ways to alter job tasks or equipment and ensure an ergonomic set-up is maintained.




Targeted Functional Assessment (TFA) - This is a functional assessment targeted to assess only the relevant injured body parts or the functional tasks relative to their specific goals.




Work Conditioning - This program is clinic based and supervised. It is ideally suited for the person who needs assistance to improve strength/endurance prior to beginning work hardening or an onsite work rehabilatation program at the workplace.




Work Hardening  - When an easeback or pre-defined work is not available at the workplace, work hardening can provide job simulation activities to prepare an individual for return to full duties at the worsksite.




Ergonomic Assessment - This service involves visiting the workplace to ensure proper work station design,  with the goal of eliminating any risk of postural strain to the employee.




Exercise Therapy - This program is well suited to a person who is currently working but requires incresed strength and/or endurance to be successful with sustaining their atendance at work. 10 - 12 sessions with a kinesiologist prepares them for a home based exercise program.




In Home Assessment – An Occupational Therapist can visit the home of an injured client and assess level of independence with activities of daily living, and perform assessibility assessments.

Vocational Services






Transferable Skills Assessment – Identifies an injured worker’s job related skills developed through previous training or life experiences.




Psychometric Testing - This assessment provides information through standardized tests about an individual's level of intellectual functioning, present level of academic skill, aptitude for scholastic achievement and work related aptitudes and interests. The goal is to make a determination about suitability of formal training, necessity of academic upgrading, indication of learning disabilities, and identify potential training or work options for that client.




Work Sample – Performing actual specific job tasks in a simulated environment to assess a client’s interest, aptitude and skill level.




Psychological Assessment - The goal of this assessment is to identify the client’s vocational strengths and needs as they relate to successful (re)habilitation, and identify factors impacting on the (re)habilitation process.




Interest and Aptitude Testing - This service involves an assessment of the client's work related interests/aptitudes. It would be appropriate for clients who, would not be considering formal training or who have had previous, successful experience in post secondary education. The goal is to identify work/training options that would take into consideration the individuals particular needs.




Job Search / Job Placement – Giving clients the necessary tools to find meaningful employment.

Disability Case Management






Case/File Management – Involving an aspect of case management such as dealing with red flag cases, meeting with a family physician, monitoring a specific aspect of the return to work plan, etc.




Return to Work Monitoring- Can involve a number of tasks including development of a return to work plan, monitoring the return to work process, meeting with health care providers and general support.

Educational Services






Back Education  - Back and spine injuries are society's most significant non-lethal medical condition. The FIT For Work Back Education Program is designed to be an interactive means of empowering both employers and employees to take a proactive role in reducing workplace injuries.




A certified Occupaional Therapist at FIT For Work can deliver a customized training program to give your employee's simple, yet effectiv, injury prevention and health awareness tips and techniques. Within he scope of the Back Education presentation, several key areas are highlighted including: The anatomy and function of the human spine (including the nerves, the vertebrae, intervertebral discs, facet joints and overlying muscles):





  • Factors that impact whether or not you are at risk for sustaining a back injury;


  • General principles to follow when lifting, carrying, pushing or puling, etc, items;


  • Specific lifting techniques that put these general principles into practice; and,


  • Hands on practice and feedback from the therapist regarding the employee's lifing technique


  • Fitness activity for employees to access their own injury risks related to fitness.


Office Ergonomic Education To assist workers in understanding the importance of proper ergonomic setup and the implications of postural loads on the spine, a 60-minute education session can be completed with up to 15 workers at a time. The session(s) will focus on ergonomics in a computerized office environment. The purpose of this education session will be to increase employee awareness about office comfort, body mechanics and ergonomic hazards, such as repetitive strain injury. In addition, this session will teach employees simple, yet effective injury prevention and health awareness tips and techniques.




More specifically, the components of this 60-minute ergonomic session will include the following:





  • General introduction to the concept of ergonomic principles.


  • Discussion of ergonomic hazards in the workplace.


  • Identification of how to arrange and position the components of your work station, including keyboard, mouse, monitor and chair, to maximize comfort and minimize stress.


  • Methods for the minimization or elimination of other ergonomic hazards in the workplace. 


  • Discussion and demonstration of other strrategies to reduce ergonomic hazards, including movement breaks and stretching techniques.
